The most basic iteration of the laptop has a price of £459, but will be upwards configurable to an impressive 8GB of DDR3 RAM, up to 640GB of storage and an optional 1GB ATI graphics card – with the cost rising as you go.

Smaller than traditional laptops but larger than handhelds, mini-laptops offer most of the features you get from their bulky ancestors – web browsing, document creation, editing, and email – just slightly scaled down in terms of both size and power. Most appealing of all, they’re cheap. Mini-laptops range from $299 (for the most bare-bones version of the Asus Eee) up to $1,399 for a fully-loaded Fujitsu LifeBook U810. Though there’s some category overlap, mini-laptops shouldn’t be confused with ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs), which more closely resemble handhelds and cost more (prices range from about $700 to $1,500) and the more-powerful ultra-portable PCs, such as Lenovo’s ThinkPad X300, which sells for a pricey $2,420.

Of course, there are some tradeoffs that come with mini-laptops’ bargain basement prices.

“You’re not going get a super-powerful processor in there, and usually you’re limited on storage space,” says Ian Bell, editor in chief of Digital Trends, a consumer-technology analysis site.

In addition, most subnotebooks lack CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drives so you won’t be able to play movies on your computer.

Mini-laptops trace their roots back to the One Laptop Per Child project, a program started by an MIT professor with the goal of providing every child in the developing world with a $100 laptop. Dell leaks details of upcoming Quad-Core Laptop Chips

Dell, along with PC maker Hewlett Packard has leaked details on the web about Intel’s new quad-core laptop processors…..what a mischievous bunch!

Dell has listed the new quad-core Core i7-840QM and Core i7-740QM processors as available with a Studio 15 laptop, with HP adding details of the processors to its manual for Envy 17 laptops.

The laptops are aimed at gaming enthusiasts and those wanting high end machines, with the idea of replacing desktop PCs.

The Core i7-740QM runs at a base clock speed of 1.73GHz, with the ability to go up to a respectable 2.93Ghz, and includes 6MB of cache.

The i7-840QM processor runs at 1.86GHz and includes 8MB of cache. It includes Turbo Boost technology to ratchet up clock speed to a whopping 3.2Ghz. Both processors will draw 45 watts of power, which I’m sure will have high end performance and gaming fans frothing at the mouth.

The processors could potentially be Intel’s first quad-core laptop chips made using the 32-nanometer process.

For the technical amongst us, the 32 nm process (also called 32 nanometer node) is the next step after the 45 nanometer process in CMOS semiconductor device fabrication. 32 nm refers to the expected average half-pitch of a memory cell at this technology level.

Intel’s range of dual-core Core i3, i5 and i7 laptop processors are made using the older 45-nanometer process.

Dell Discount Experts reported on the AMD new dual, triple and quad-core laptop processors earlier this month.
