Purchasing a Notebook Computer: Online or In-Store?

Purchasing a laptop computer is a tough task because there are so many variations. What can be equally as tough is deciding where to buy from. Many retailers sell notebooks, both in-store and online, and they each have their pros and cons. Learning a about these retailers and how to choose the best place to buy your laptop will help you buy the best one for the best price.

Online retailers generally charge lower prices on the actual laptop because they do not have all the normal costs of brick-and-mortar retailers. They do typically charged shipping, and sometimes a handling fee as well. These can add up. In-store retailers have to pay the large amounts for rent, and therefore might end up charging a little more. You are able to test computers in person, and see how they work for you.

Each of these retailers have their positive and negative aspects, and it would be a good idea to keep those in your mind when shopping. You could combine both aspects of these retailers into one. Below are four steps that outline this idea.

Step 1: You need to go look at laptops at some local retailers to get an idea of pricing and availability. After you do notebook computer research, and feel comfortable in what you are looking for, visit several stores to test computers. Make a note of the ones you like, writing down the name, price, model number and positive/negative reactions to it.

Step 2: Use your notes to do online research. Start by visiting the websites for the retailers you visited in your area. They might run deals on line, and offer free delivery to your local store. This could save you time and money. Check all the notebooks you saw and note pricing differences.

Step 3: You need to research online only retailers selling the laptop computers you found in-store. Use a Google or Yahoo search to find online retailers that sell laptops. Note prices, including shipping costs, of the computers you found. Don’t forget to record the websites so you can easily find them.

Step 4: Sit down and compare prices between the in-store, in-store retailer’s websites, and the online retailers. It should be pretty clear which place has the laptop for the cheapest, but also consider things like ease of repair, reliability of company, and return policies. It might be worth a little more money to have reassurance that your laptop would be fixed easily under a warranty if something were wrong with it.

Understanding in-store and online retailers and how to find the best price between them is the perfect way to find the right laptop at the right price. You have to do quality research on notebook computers before you begin looking for a laptop, otherwise you might buy the laptop that is incorrect for your needs and wants. This could require you to have to buy a new laptop in the future. Proper research ahead of time will help you to get the right laptop as well as save you money down the road.
