#217 – Q&A: AMD Phenom II x4 955 vs Intel’s Core i7 920 CPU
Hey Rodney, I love the new videos you been putting up lately, I’ve learned tons in the past few days watching them. I’m looking to build my first computer and I have a budget of $1500 to work with, I’ve trying to decide between the AMD Phenom II x4 955 and Intel’s Core i7 920. At a chance the 3.2ghz vs 2.66ghz seems like a no brainer but I’ve read a lot of reviews in favor of the i7 920, in your opinion which would be the better choice? The system will be used for both gaming and graphic design. Thanks much! -michael

@ Thekoolman73
a I7 does not have 7 core’s
a I5 does not have 5 core’s
a Phenom 2 does not have 2 core’s
a I7 has 4 core’s which can handle 2 treats which make it a virtual octo-core
a I5 has 2 core’s (dualcore)
a Phenom2 can have 2, 3 or 4 core’s
depends on which CPU you have.
PhenomII X4 = Quad
PhenomII X3 = Tripple
PhenomII X2 = Dual
if you post a comment, know what you are talking about, and don’t talk shit.
next time, do research before posting non-true comments.
@thekoolman73 W.T.F IT DOESN’T WORK LIKE THAT! they all have 4 cores, but i7 has more threads per core and more compatibility.
yeah becoause i7 has 7 cores!
and i5 has 5 cores.. i meant cmon thats not less
7 cores are not less! phenom 2 has only 2 cores i7 better compared to that piece of shit!
your budget is 1500? lmao
dude dont switch to amd… intel is best!
buy core i7
hey just wanting some advice, im buying and i7 920 for gaming, ive chose my video card but dont know which mobo and ram i should go with, i dint want to spend over 350.
@EnforcedProductions – Just because you can’t afford a product doesn’t mean it sucks. Think about that bag of potato chips you wanted just last week, but didn’t have the .99 cents for it. Did they suck just because you had to walk away hungry, or maybe it was the store clerk that sucked because he wouldn’t let you have them for .98 cents. Get a J-O-B then you might not have to keep saying stuff sucks when you know just like you learned the other day it’s you that sucks not those chips.
@gregrory8 – Hang in though AMD is bound to trip and bust there head and knock something lose which will spark a grand idea to develop a CPU that can compete with the Core i7’s. Only problem is by then Intel will have developed the 16 Core CPU and this process will start all over for you.
@gregrory89 – LMFAO at you and your Phenom/Phenom II and Tom’s Hardware if they where even stupid enough to post something like that on their website. I got a feeling though that you just have a case of the “Poor Mans Blues” and you’re on here running lose with your diarrhea of the mouth trying to act like you got something to match a Core i7 when the rest of the world even AMD themselves know better.
i was seeing some benchmarks on toms hardware and i saw that the phenom and phenom ii is faster in gaming than the i7, the i7 is only more advanced in some other programs i like the phenom better because of wat i just said that its better in gaming than the i7 so u should research on witch of the two is better on toms hardware
Just look at the passmark scores and rank. I must know more than you at least cause I went with core i7 for my build, sorry you are cheap, not my fault.
@ryotaryuu Noob, learn real facts and not what you hear
The Phenom II X4 965 BE cannot be compared to an i7 920.. even compared to an i5 750, the i5 and the Phenom have about the same results in benchmarks except the i5 has better results in video editing and gaming performance…
intel suckes. go amd
overclock wayy higher my 920 is at 3.8 completely stable running 41 low 71 full load
@OutcastersTR haha i still love my 955
my 965 is overcloked to 3.8 on air with the asus crosshair iii formal
too bad amd’s cpu’s werent made to compete against intels core i5 or i7 what a shame
more like one word, FACT
intel cpu’s are (currently) far outperforming their amd counterparts
fucked up lol
3 words for this video INTEL FAN BOY
Actually another thing is intel plays dirty so they can get their hands on every mother board possible placing their chips in it because they won’t to force amd out dirtily. =w= so I suggest AMD, further more intel is run by dumbasses.
To start to really compare, you need to know the architecture of both. In the past intel has built what they call Dual and Quad Cores. The difference is AMD build there cpu with a serperate Cache dedicated to each core of the processor. Intel with there Core Duo, and Core Quad did not. Also you must factor in accepted memory frequencies, and Hyper Transport Layouts. And lastly Intel is always 1yr ahead in the Nano Meter Process. If they were working with the same die size, thing would be closer
The only reason why the i7’s perform better with video games is STRICTLY because of support. Look at compression/decompression benchmarks they are almost identical in ratio. Most games are made for Intel, because like with most computer parts and software companies they are monopolized and proprietary figures. People need to do their research before posting these ridiculous comments.
Ignorance.
Where in the hell are you getting your Statistics from? There is no way in hell that they perform 30-35% more than the AMD. Tom’s Hardware would agree with tallandme13’s comment. I have the AMD x4 II AM3 955 and I can tell you right now if there was a 30% increase in performance I would have paid the extra 500-600 dollars for the rig.
Link me to your statistics, in my opinion you know nothing about processors.
